  • Painted monumental decorations served as inspiration for cabinetmakers creating ebony panels in the mid 17th century. The sources used were very diverse in nature. However, all had engravings made of them and it is these that served as models. The cabinetmakers preferred to use recent engravings, even if the subject matter was older. The panels raise the problem of the transposition of a polychromatic composition of large dimensions onto a monochromatic and small ebony panel. There is also the question of the respective responsibilities of the cabinetmaker and of the patron in the choice and disposition of the scenes represented.
