Resumen de Le goût des curés parisiens d'après l'enquête épiscopale de 1854

Yves Gagneux

  • The Episcopal Inquiry of 1854 reveals the taste of Parisian priests concerning the decoration of their churches. Parisian churches were completely redeveloped after the Revolution. The Episcopal inquiry was carried out by Monseigneur Sibour and included questions about churches and their furnishings. The priests' judgments diverge on the style and the marks left by history, though they agree about the need to emphasize the buildings that they would like bigger. Their conception of decoration is essentially concerned with the aesthetic: The works' history and liturgical function is generally not commented on, but thematic, stylistic, and technical aspects retain the priests' attention. The priests appreciate the art of the Ancien Régime, ignore the productions of the early 19th century, and mention contemporary creations more frequently.
