Resumen de Nicolas de Hoey: De Fontainebleau à Ancy-le-France

Magali Bélime-Droguet

  • The three decorative cycles painted by Nicolas de Hoey at Ancy-le-Franc reflect his knowledge of the décor of the Château de Fontainebleau in France. De Hoey, a painter of Flemish origin established in Dijon, enjoyed a certain renown for having participated, along with his brother Jean d'Hoey, in the decoration carried out under the direction of Ambroise Dubois in the Diane Gallery in Fontainebleau. Between 1596 and 1611, he was commissioned by his brother Charles-Henry de Clermont-Tonnerre to complete three major decorative cycles at Ancy-le-Franc: the Psyche chamber, the antechamber of the Caesars, and the Judith chamber. The angles of the Psyche chamber are reminiscent of the dispositions of the king's chamber in Fontainebleau; in the antechamber of the Caesars, the representation of Mars recalls the Neptune of the Diane Gallery; and the cycle retracing the history of Judith draws largely on two major decorative cycles painted by Ambroise Dubois.
