Resumen de La ville par le détail: la sala di Manto au palais ducal de Mantoue

Jérémie Koering

  • The sala di Manto in the ducal palace in Mantua, Italy, features a cycle of eight scenes representing the history of the city. The cycle was commissioned in the 1570s by the then Duke of Mantua, Guglielmo Gonzaga. The paintings by Lorenzo Costa the Younger depict the history of the city from its legendary foundation by Manto up to the fortifications planned by Federico II Gonzaga in the years 1520–40. The cycle thus celebrates the power yielded over the city by the Gonzaga family by inscribing it in the Antique and glorious tradition. However, beyond this general dynastic message, the cycle's originality lies in the decision to write the history of the city according to the rhythm of the major alterations of the past (construction of city gates, bridges, and walls).
