  • In France in the 17th century, the arts and architecture greatly contributed to the glory of the monarchy. It was thus that Fréart de Chambray, close to the surintendant Sublet de Noyers, came to publish his Parallèle de l'Architecture Antique avec la Moderne in order to champion the new architecture; the painter Louis Bertrand and the architect Pierre Mignard were tasked by Colbert with the survey of antiquities in the South of France; and Antoine Desgodets was sent to Italy to survey Rome's prestigious ruins. In addition, the publication of Vitruvius' treaty was confided to Claude Perrault by Louis XIV's minister. Over some 40 years, these projects were part of a global artistic policy that aimed at imposing Paris as a new artistic capital.
