  • Resumen
    • A letter by one of the Henri III's chaplains to Cardinal Luigi d'Este provides a very precise description of the arrangements and furnishings of Henri III's lodgings in the Louvre in 1585. The layout, which corresponds to the ceremonies instituted by the king at this time, multiplies antechambers in order to lengthen and give solemnity to the visitor's route to the king. The furnishings contributed to the sought-after crescendo effect through the utilization of wall hangings that progressively became more luxurious. The canopies, the beds raised on platforms and surrounded by gilded wood balustrades, and the royal table all illustrated the dignity of the master of the realm. The letter is printed here.
