In this work present the mineralogical and microtextural characterization of near surface sediments recovered from the Prestige sinking area in SW of the Galicia Bank, using backscattered-electron Scanning Electron Microscopy. Such technique allowed us to characterize the mineralogy of the biogenic and terrigenous signals identified in the geochemical records, to detect early diagenetic processes and to describe different depositional processes. The high power of resolution of this technique for the chemical identification turns it into a useful tool for the study of the geochemistry of sediments.
