A metal plaque of the Lamentation over the Body of Christ by Moderno gave rise to many derivatives in Antwerp. Moderno was one of the most famous makers of plaques during the Italian Renaissance. His Lamentation is generally considered to have been made between 1506 and 1513, when he was in Rome. The existence of paintings based on the plaque indicates that it was known to northern artists by the middle of the 16th century. The writer goes on to discuss the five categories into which paintings inspired by the plaque can be divided.
