  • Resumen
    • Under the episcopates of Johann von Dirpheim (1307-1328) and his successor, Berthold von Bucheck (1328-1353), the stained glass windows of the aisles of the Strasbourg Cathedral were renewed. Despite major losses due to the construction of the chapels of Saint Catherine (around 1340) and Saint Martin (from 1515), the iconographical program of this project can nevertheless be fairly accurately reconstituted. The group of windows on the southern side featured a vast stained glass cycle from Genesis to the Last Judgment. On the other hand, the windows on the northern side were only partially modernized. A coherent program of the Virtues was elaborated for the group of three eastern windows. It comprised a Combat of Vices and Virtues, a Throne of Salomon, as well as an Adoration of the Kings, which established an iconographic link to the gallery of German kings and emperors, which already existed. Studying them also helps to draw conclusions about the configuration of the nave in the first phase of its construction. The second eastern window of the north side and probably the first window of the south side were constituted of three lancets because of the staircase turrets which were installed there.
