The author examines the orientations of art history from the second half of the 19th century in France. She highlights the fact that art exhibitions, particularly the exposition-dossier, or thematic exhibition, can be tools for mediation and enhancement as well as links to art historian research practices. She demonstrates that museums are stakeholders in the landscape of art history and contemporary cultural knowledge.
