  • Resumen
    • This article attempts to reconstitute the composition and the chronology of Sébastien Bourdon's history of Moses series, painted around 1657-1660, for the Baron de Vauvert, and woven after his works. By retracing the history of this series, the author tries to prove that two of the paintings in the church of Crécy-en-Ponthieu, Moise Devant le Buisson Ardent (Moses and the Burning Bush) and the Frappement du Rocher (Striking the Rock), as well as the Passage de la Mer Rouge (Crossing the Red Sea) in the Abbaye aux Hommes in Caen, a convent affiliated with the Order of Saint Maur, are part of this series. The tapestry of the Buisson Ardent which recently resurfaced on the art market, and which takes up the composition of the painting in Crécy, would seem to confirm that the painting and the tapestry are part of this series. The cycle in Crécy, which comes from the abbaye of Dommartin, and is composed of two paintings after Bourdon and two copies after Nicolas Poussin (Moïse Sauvé des Eaux) and Charles Le Brun (Serpent d'Airain) finally seems to provide eloquent evidence of the taste demonstrated in particular by the Mauristes and the Prémontrés in France in the 18th century for the iconography of Moses painted in the manner of Poussin and of Raphael.
