By studying the representation of dance in the context of the Roman de la Rose (British Library, ms Harley 4425), the dimension of this practice can be analyzed in terms of an initiation ritual, and its symbolical significance within a group can be interpreted, especially concerning couples of dancers, through the prism of medieval courtesy.
