  • Resumen
    • The present chapter examines inter-subject variation in L2 speech perception by exploring the role of individual differences in cognitive ability in L2 speech perception for bilingual Spanish/Catalan advanced learners of English. The chapter offers a brief review of previous research on the effect of contextual and input factors on L2 speech learning as well as the effect of cognitive skills on L2 speech perception/production.

Finally, a set of speech-based cognitive tasks tapping on phonological short-term memory, acoustic memory and attention control is described and preliminary outcome measures are discussed in relation to their adequacy to characterise the processing of L2 speech.
