    La investigación y el estudio de la ingeniería del pasado, así como su presentación expositiva, contribuyen a comprender el significado de las obras públicas en el desarrollo económico y social de España. Si gestionamos bien este patrimonio puede convertirse en una importante fuente de riqueza como recurso turístico de calidad. Por ello, el conocimiento, respeto y valoración de este inmenso legado, nos permitirá encarar como sociedad avanzada un futuro mejor y con menos riesgos, también en el ámbito de la ingeniería civil. El presente artículo glosa la actividad realizada por CEHOPU en la difusión del patrimonio de las obras públicas en nuestro país y fuera de nuestras fronteras a través de la organización de exposiciones. Con ellas se pretende mostrar como notables ejemplos históricos muestran que, una obra bien resuelta e insertado en su entorno ofrece al espectador menos avezado una sensación de que, si no hubiese sido erigida, el paisaje quedaría incompleto y desasistido. Cuando se produce esta integración, la obra trasciende el plano de la técnica y se convierte en cultura e incluso en arte.

    The research and study of past engineering and its presentation in exhibition form contributes to a better understanding of the implications of public works on the social and economic development of Spain. If we correctly manage this heritage it may well become an important source of wealth as a quality tourism resource. As such, the knowledge, respect and appraisal of this immense legacy would also allows us, as a more advanced society, to embrace a better and less hazardous future within the scope of civil engineering. The present article provides an overview of the work carried out by the Spanish Centre for Historical Studies of Public Works and Town Planning (CEHOPU) in the divulgence of the heritage of public works both inside and outside Spain through the organization of exhibitions. These exhibitions show how notable historic structures and buildings readily demonstrate how a work that is well designed and well incorporated within its environment give the least-suspecting onlooker the idea that the landscape would be incomplete and abandoned without their presence. When this integration occurs, the work transcends the plane of pure technique and enters the realm of culture and even art.
