  • Resumen
    • Mostly known for his literary works, the Bolognese Francesco Cavazzoni is noted by the local sources (Masini, Malvasia, Crespi) as a “diligentissimo et studiosissimo” painter who was born in 1559 and who trained with Bartolomeo Passerotti before undertaking a collaboration with the Carraci. However, a trial document, previously known to scholars but never properly analysed, clearly demonstrates (as M. Pigozzi pointed out) that this date of birth has to be anticipated. The transcription of the entire document (a rather intriguing reading since Cavazzoni is accused of defamation towards his love rival) confirms that the painter had a long-time collaboration with Passerotti (who becomes one of his accusers), following him out of Bologna, in Città di Castello and in Cremona. This collaboration brings new light to Cavazzoni’s artistic environment and opens the possibility, as I. di Majo brilliantly suggested in 2003, of attribuiting some works of copper to him. This article aims to reconsider the chronology of Cavazzoni’s activity in accordance with the information now avaliable and to propose some new attributions in addition to his catalogue.
