Beta-lactamases are enzymes produced by bacteria that inactivate beta-lactams by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring thereof. The present study aimed to explore the prevalence of Enterobacteriaceae producing extended spectrum beta-lactamases in urine and stool cultures of patients Eguia Edward Hospital 2007-2008. For that 187 cultures from urine and stool cultures of patients attending the hospital Eduardo Eguia were analyzed. The results showed a prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in urine cultures of Eduardo Eguia Hospital found is 33.3%; but in case of prevalence coprocultures ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae is far greater than that proposed in the hypothesis as it reached 73%.
