  • Resumen
    • The fifteenth century L’ Aquila’s painting is still an unexplored research field lacking both documents and works of art; this is due to the many disastrous earthquakes and plunders that the area has suffered in the centuries. However, in this production it is possible to find some paintings worthy of consideration that, in spite of all, have arrived to the present time in good condition.

Among them two works by an unknown painter, located in the National Museum of Abruzzo, deserve special attention: one represents ‘Blessed John of Capistrano and stories of his life’ and the other ‘Saint Francisco of Assisi receiving stigmata’. In the passage of time these board paintings have been the object of contradictory and confusing criticism until in 1950 Ferdinando Bologna, in a well known essay, included them in his reconstruction of the career of so called ‘Maestro di San Giovanni da Capestrano’, who he thought was also the author of two more pieces.

In this essay Bologna stated that the ‘Maestro’ began his professional education around 1460 in Naples and in Rome and then was in L’Aquila from 1485 to 1490. Before going to L’Aquila, according to Bologna, the painter produced two more works: a ‘Saint Anthony of Padua’ in Naples and a ‘Saint Bernardin of Siena’ in Rome. Here we would like to present a new series of research that would allow us to reconsider the present order of the altar piece of Blessed John of Capistrano and a different dating for the two L’Aquila paintings.
