Resumen de Bigas Luna's Cycle of Spanishness

Catherine Bourland Ross

  • Juan José Bigas Luna captures changing Spanish culture in his films. From his second full-length film Bilbao (1978) to Jamón, jamón (1992) Yo soy la Juani (2006), Bigas Luna uses images of Spain to underline the immutable Spanishness of Spain, its consistent ability to be unique unto itself, and to emphasize the constantly changing international importance of Spain. Through his filmic structure, images of sexuality, and focus on consumerism, Bigas Luna draws attention to the cycle of national identity transformation against the backdrop of globalization forces.
