  Cuando se funda la Academia Chilena de Pintura, en 1849, su primer director, el italiano Alejandro Cicarelli leyó un discurso donde propone un modelo de enseñanza basado en la tradición grecorromana y en las academias oficiales europeas de la época. Este modelo caracterizó la enseñanza de la pintura en Chile por más de 50 años. Cicarelli fue contratado por el gobierno chileno cuando prestaba servicios como artista en la Corte del Emperador Pedro II, en Brasil.

  When the National Painting Academy of Chile was founded in 1849, the first director, the Italian Alejandro Cicarelli, read a speech where he proposed a teaching model based in the Greco-Roman tradition and in the official European academies of that time. This model characterized the teaching of the Chilean painting for more than 50 years. Cicarelli was hired by the Chilean government when he worked as an artist in the Court of the Emperor Pedro II, in Brazil.
