La densification : un tabou dans l'univers pavillonnaire?

    Suburban neighborhoods have the reputation of being frozen at the morphological level, because of residents’ reluctance to change their living environment and to densification. Yet, housing estates built during the first half of the 20th century show a proven, progressive and spontaneous densification. First, this article aims to appreciate how they evolved over the decades until current changes. Secondly, we will question how the inhabitants accept and participate to these transformations which are acute while densification is a major goal of sustainable urban development. Resuming the path formerly taken by F. Dubost in the Coudreaux district (Parisian suburb) and J. Jeanneau in the Bois-du-Roy district (suburb of Angers), we chose these two areas to conduct a work of observation and a qualitative survey based on interviews.

    Les quartiers pavillonnaires ont la réputation d’être figés sur le plan morphologique, notamment en raison d’une réticence de leurs habitants au changement de leur cadre de vie et à la densité. Pourtant, les lotissements constitués au cours du premier xxe siècle témoignent d’une densification avérée, progressive et spontanée. Cet article a pour objectif d’apprécier d’une part comment ils ont pu évoluer au fil des décennies et jusqu’aux transformations en cours. D’autre part, il interroge la manière dont la population y participe et les reçoit à l’heure où la densification est un objectif majeur du développement durable urbain. Reprenant le chemin autrefois emprunté par F. Dubost pour le quartier des Coudreaux (banlieue parisienne) et J. Jeanneau pour le quartier du Bois-du-Roy (banlieue d’Angers), on a retenu ces deux lotissements pour y conduire un travail d’observation et d’enquête qualitative par entretiens.
