El artículo analiza cómo se evoca la ciudad provincial de Viborg en la novela Byen og verden (La ciudad y el mundo, 1992) del autor danés Peer Hultberg. A través de 100 textos independientes el uno del otro, la novela crea un mosaico de las vidas de sus habitantes. La técnica polifónica da lugar a una imagen plural de la ciudad narrada por un narrador, que es omnipresente pero no todopoderoso. Lo que conduce la acción es el cotilleo, que de este modo se muestra como una fuerza de dos caras; por un lado junta a los habitantes alrededor de las diversas narraciones, y por otro les separa por la exclusión social de sus víctimas. Por debajo de la superficie de aparentes mezquindades diarias coexiste un tejido de motivos mitológicos y bíblicos, que va más allá de Viborg para dejar entrever un microcosmos, ya que expone algunas condiciones existenciales de la vida y de la convivencia humana.

The present article will examine how the novel Byen og verden (The City and the World, 1992) written by the Danish author Peer Hultberg evokes the provincial city of Viborg. Through 100 self-contained texts, the novel creates a mosaic of the lives of its inhabitants. The polyphonic technique gives away to a pluralistic image of the city, narrated by an omnipresent, but not all-powerful narrator. What drives the action is gossip, which shows itself as a twofaced force; one which links the inhabitants around the different narrations, and another which separates them because of the social exclusion of its victims. Underneath the surface of an apparent daily malice exists a scheme of mythological and biblical motives, which leads beyond Viborg and paints a micro cosmos while exposing some existential conditions of human life in community.
