    Durante la Baja Edad Media el control de la frontera «riojana» entre las coronas de Castilla y de Navarra y aun de Aragón fue una cuestión compleja y conflictiva. En aquel amplio periodo, una serie de familias de la nobleza media, como los Sánchez de Alfaro aquí tratados, se ocuparon tanto de mantener el dominio de las respectivas fortalezas como de explotar y mantener en funcionamiento la estructura socioeconómica de la región. Enrevesado juego geoestratégico en el que la alta nobleza funcionaba, generalmente, de acuerdo a sus intereses propios y a unas reglas consuetudinarias. A finales del cuatrocientos la nueva concepción política impulsada por los grandes señores, como el I Conde de Aguilar, provocaron importantes cambios sociales rompiendo equilibrios y tradiciones. El estudio de los orígenes remotos, de los cambios y de las permanencias de tal proceder obliga, por lo tanto, a introducirnos irremisiblemente en el mundo de la microhistoria como instrumento desde el que acceder a un conocimiento más profundo. En este caso concreto, siguiendo el devenir histórico de un linaje de caballeros, los Sánchez de Alfaro, y de sus relaciones con los señores a los que servían, los de Cameros.

    During the Late Middle Ages, the control of the "Rioja" border between the crowns of Castile and of Navarre and even of Aragon, was a complicated and conflictive question. In that long period of time, a series of families of intermediate nobility, such as the Sanchez de Alfaro family, discussed here, undertook the task of both maintaining the domain of the respective fortresses and of exploiting and maintaining the socio-economic structure of the region. A complicated geostrategic game where the high nobility operated, in general, in agreement with their own interests and some common-law rules. At the end of the four hundreds, the new political conception driven by the great lords, like the 1st Count of Aguilar, caused important social changes, disturbing the balance and traditions. The study of the remote origins, of the changes and of the continuation of this procedure forces us, therefore, to irremissibly enter the world of micro-history as an instrument to add a deeper knowledge. In this specific case, following the historical reality of a lineage of knights, the Sanchez de Alfaro, and of their relationships with the lords they served, the lords of Cameros.
