In recent years, historians have underlined the importance of the notionof support to a history of reading. This essay insists on the relevance of historicityof the reader-body which fuses into the supports of writing. It reflects the historyof reading as a history of the body and speculates if the invention of silent readingin the Medieval Western world should not be thought of as the production of anew body technique.
