A recent movement in the field of management strategy suggests that the sources of competitive edge should be sought within companies. The works which argue this point are known collectively as the Resource Based View of the Firm. This article presents a brief, systematic outline of the concepts underlying this new viewpoint, especially as regards the conditions required for resources to be a source of a sustained competitive edge. A classification of resources is also proposed which can be used to analyse them systematically within companies.
