Se aborda en este artículo la vida y pensamiento de Henry Charles Lea en relación a sus estudios sobre la historia de la Inquisición española. Se esboza brevemente la red de colaboradores que Lea estableció en toda Latinoamérica así como su perfil político e intelectual, subrayando su importancia para la escritura de la obra The Inquisition in the Spanish Dependencies (1908). Finalmente, se plantean los motivos que llevaron a estos intelectuales a colaborar intensamente con el historiador norteamericano en el marco de los procesos de construcción de identidades sociales y políticas en Latinoamérica en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Se toma como eje conductor de este planteamiento la correspondencia de Juan María Gutiérrez con Henry Charles Lea.

In this article the author discusses how Henry Charles Lea's life and thinking relates to his studies of the history of the Spanish Inquisition. It briefly outlines the network of collaborators that Lea had established throughout Latin America, as well as their political and intellectual profile, highlighting its importance for the writing of the work The Inquisition in the Spanish ependencies (1908). Finally, it presents the reasons that led these intellectuals to work closely with the American historian in the context of the process of construction of social and political identities in Latin America in the second half of the Nineteenth Century. The correspondence of Juan Maria Gutierrez to Henry Charles Lea is taken as the guiding line of this approach.
