  • Resumen
    • The construction of the loggia or portico of the church of SS. Annunziata was the last step in the design of an urban space, which began in the mid-16th century and waas destined to significantly reflect the princely court and to be the stage par excellence of religious piety and princely glory.

The building of the portico was aimed at making “that Piazza far more beautiful and magnificent surrounded by many colonnades” and proposed the (visual) unification of buildings that had been erected in various periods and with different functions. Moreover, it placed centre stage the mother church of the Order of the Servites, the only great medieval religious order founded by the Florentines, thus emphasizing its roots in the city. And it is by no means of secondary importance that the promoters and financers of the construction were Alessandro and Roberto Pucci, from one of the most prominent families who were Medici supporters and who owed their status and honours to the munificence of the prince.

The dynamics of the work, the organization of the constructions site and the activity of the designers an builders is documented in Abbot alessandro’s unpublished accounts book and all the pages concerning the supply of works and materials are to be found in the appendix.
