Resumen de Un caso clínico de lepra, situación y perspectivas de la enfermedad

J. L. Fernández, Juan Francisco Rangel Mayoral, Francisco Javier Liso Rubio

  • Objective: To describe the clinical case of a patient diagnosed with Hansen's disease or leprosy by the Dermatology Service of the Hospital Infanta Cristina in Badajoz. Case description: 25-year-old woman, from Matto Grosso (Brazil), that presents papules and universally infiltrated erythematous plaques. Thickening of the left cubital nerve and of the popliteal nerves, as well as a diminished cutaneous sensitivity in vast regions. The cutaneous biopsy that took place demonstrates the presence of abundant bacilli, a finding compatible with lepromatose leprosy. Her family records include an aunt with this pathology. The final diagnose is Hansen's disease, borderline phase. The patterned treatment is clofazimine 100 mg/day for 12 months, rifampicin 600 mg/day between 3 and 6 months depending on evolution and dapsone 50mg the first 15 days of the treatment and 100 mg/day afterwards. Comment: Leprosy is a chronic infectious and disabling disease, around which great fear has existed. It came to be considered for centuries a mysterious disease associated with some type of curse that sent into isolation and ostracism the diseased people. Currently, it is considered a little transmissible disease (natural resistance in 95% of the population), easily diagnosed, curable and of good prognosis if an early diagnose and an adequate treatment take place
