    The currently literature produced by writers from the Brazilian suburbs forms a new way of thinking the representation of poverty, bringing up issues such as the author’s position and the role of literature as a tool of collective action with effectsof mobilization and organization of the life of the marginalized and socially excluded communities. The objective of this article is to discuss the topic of literary engagement as an inseparable component of peripheral literature, from the trajectoryof Alessandro Buzo as a cultural agent, whose intervention gives to literature a function at the same time practical and symbolical.

    A literatura contemporaneamente produzida pelos escritores das periferias brasileiras constitui um novo modo de pensar a representação da pobreza, trazendo à tona questões como a posição do autor e o papel da literatura como ferramenta deação coletiva com efeitos de mobilização e organização da vida das comunidades marginalizadas e socialmente excluídas. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir o tema do engajamento literário como componente indissociável da literatura periférica, a partir da trajetória de Alessandro Buzo como agente cultural, cuja intervenção confere à literatura uma função ao mesmo tempo prática e simbólica.
