Il complesso presepiale settecentesco di Imperia e una scultura tardo quattrocentesca di ambito napoletano

    It was possible to investigate the construction techniques of these two artefacts thanks to the absence of preparatory layers as well as no paint layer. In the case of the eighteenth–century presepe, or Nativity crêche from Imperia these are missing as a matter of choice in the design process. Instead, in the case of the fourteenth–century sculpture from Palazzo Venezia in Rome, an extended area of lacune made the investigation possible. The types of wood, the different kinds of joints, the traces of the instruments used, all provided interesting information that was useful in reconstructing the techniques and working methods applied. There was lively interest both in the artefacts themselves and the signs of either brushstroked or penned ink directly on the wood supports. In the author’s opinion these traces constitute an outline drawn to guide the craftsman charged with applying the painted decoration.

    Grazie alla mancanza degli strati preparatori e di pellicola pittorica, presenti per scelte progettuali nel caso del presepe settecentesco di Imperia, e dovute invece ad un estesa zona di lacune sulla scultura trecentesca proveniente da Palazzo Venezia a Roma, si è potuto indagare le tecniche costruttive di questi manufatti.

    Le specie lignee, i diversi incastri messi in opera, i segni degli strumenti hanno fornito informazioni interessanti, utili a ricostruire le tecniche e le modalità di lavorazione dei pezzi in esame.

    Vivo interesse ha suscitato il riscontro su, entrambi i manufatti, di segni tracciati a pennello o a penna direttamente sul legno di supporto. Questi segni costituiscono a parere dell’autrice un abbozzo, una guida per chi si doveva far carico della decorazione pittorica.
