Tecniche esecutive dei supporti di quattro sculture lignee marchigiane realizzate tra il XIV e il XVII secolo

    Often the restoration of a work of art becomes an opportunity, thanks also to the contribution of related scientific investigations, to verify and learn more about the techniques and materials the artist and the bottega, or workshop used in creating it. This is what happened in the case of four polychrome wood sculptures located in churches and museums in the Marche region. Not all are of high quality or particularly well preserved, however their restoration provided an opportunity to compare the techniques used in their realization with those of contemporary works from the same or bordering cultural areas.

    And thanks to this comparison, corroborated in several cases by more in–depth scientific analyses, we were able to gather interesting information and confirm the way in which their makers worked in various workshops active in the Marche region between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries to create these wood supports. We were also able to ascertain from the layers how they prepared the wood to receive the polychromy.

    Spesso il restauro di un’opera d’arte diventa, grazie anche al contributo di indagini scientifiche correlate, momento di verifica e apprendimento riguardo alle tecniche e i materiali utilizzati dall’artista o dalla “bottega” nel realizzarla.

    Ciò è accaduto nel caso di quattro sculture lignee policrome, collocate in chiese e musei marchigiani, non tutte ben conservate o di pregevole fattura, ma il cui restauro ha dato la possibilità di confrontare la loro tecnica esecutiva con quella di opere coeve appartenenti alla stessa area culturale o ad aree culturali limitrofe.

    È grazie a questo confronto, avvalorato in alcuni casi da approfondite analisi scientifiche, che si sono potute raccogliere interessanti informazioni e conferme relative al modo di operare nella realizzazione dei supporti lignei, e degli strati preparatori atti a ricevere la policromia, all’interno di alcune “botteghe” attive nelle Marche tra il XIV e il XVII secolo.
