the myth of pishtaco plays an important role in the Vargas Llosa’s novel, not just as character but also in the plot’s structure. The paper aims to analyze the relation between the narrative techniques used in the novel and the social function of the indigenous tale. The myth, that provides a restructuring of reality in social critical situations, becomes in the novel a metaphor of literature as a rewrite of the world, a fundamental topic in the Vargas Llosas’s theory of narrative.
