Rio Claro e a greve dos trabalhadores da Cia. Paulista de Estradas de Ferro em 1906

    Rehearsal today. This was the message written in code sent through telegraph to 119 train stations calling all workers of the Companhia Paulista de Estrada de Ferro to the 1906 strike. Among several others, Rio Claro was one of the cities where the coded message was sent. It was the seat of important railroad services, such as warehouses, offices, garages and repair shops; this meant that the strike movement altered the social, cultural and economic daily life of its inhabitants. This article shows how a modern activity (the railroad) and its strike movement altered the life of Rio Claro. It also shows how the acts of the Companhia Paulistas managers to solve the strike were anything but modern, in view of their use of the State's forces.

    Hoje há Ensaio. Foi a mensagem cifrada enviada pelo telégrafo às 119 estações da linha férrea que deflagrou a greve dos trabalhadores da Cia. Paulista de Estrada de Ferro, em 1906. Entre as cidades atingidas pela greve estava Rio Claro -sede de importantes serviços ferroviários, como armazéns, escritórios, oficinas- a qual foi abarcada pela movimentação que alterou o cotidiano da população nos níveis econômico e sócio-cultural. Este artigo, portanto, pretende mostrar como a movimentação grevista alterou o cotidiano da população, justamente no serviço que expressava a "modernização" alcançada na cidade (o serviço ferroviário); ao mesmo tempo em que revela os limites dessa "modernidade" representados pelas atitudes dos dirigentes da Cia. Paulista para a resolução da greve, apoiados pelas forças do Estado.
