Magnetoestratigraphic data have been studied and interpreted along a stratigraphic section on the palaeogene deposits of the SE margin of the Ebro Basin at Vilanova de Prades locality. The ages obtained for the succession range from Bartonian (Eocene) to Rupelian (Oligocene). The results of the study of the sedimentary facies and the evolution of the depositional rates suggest a start of the deformation of the Catalan Coastal Ranges at Bartonian (17n) and an accerelation of this deformation at upper Priabonian (13r). The Vilanova de Prades section has been measured in sediments deformed by an anticline-syncline flexure and those sediments have been correlated to other belonging to magnetostratigraphic sections in undeformed central parts of the Ebro basin. After the isopach geometry of the chronostratigraphic units obtained from the correlation between marginal (folded) and central (unfolded) basin sections we can state that main deformation (folding) took place totally after the sedimentation of the Scala Dei deposits forming La Llena range (after 12 n, 32.5 Ma).
