The discovery of unpublished documents in the notarial archives of Fabriano sheds light on many aspects of the local art history at the end of the 16th century, regarding two the most important monumental churches of the town: Saint Benedict, served by the Benedictine Congregation of the Silvestrines, and Saint Venanzo, Cathedral of the Diocese of Fabriano-Matelica since 1728. The protaginist of these commission episodes is one of the most interesting artists of the late mannerism of the Marches, Simone de Magistris from Caldarola, who had already signed, for the Church of Saint Agustine of Fabriano, his first work, made independently, without the coopertaion of his brother Giovan Francesco, is now kept in the Picture Gallery 'Bruno Molajoli' of Fabriano.
