Resumen de La creatività linguistica di Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti

Nel Settecento il rapido progresso delle scienze porta con sé la necessità di sviluppare un linguaggio settoriale adeguato alla sempre crescente specializzazione delle discipline. La formazione di composti neoclassici è uno degli strumenti privilegiati per la creazione di tali neologismi. In Italia il naturalista Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti, figura di primo piano dell’élite intellettuale fiorentina, è l’autore di una serie di neologismi a base greca orientati in particolare alla definizione di un sistema di discipline storico-naturalistiche.
L’articolo presenta una ricognizione dei grecismi presenti in tre opere significative di Targioni Tozzetti, classificati in base al periodo di attestazione, e si sofferma in particolare sui neologismi a lui attribuibili. Un’analisi più approfondita è dedicata al settore in cui la creatività del naturalista si è maggiormente esercitata, quello dei nomi delle scienze. Di essi sono indagati la fortuna lessicografica dall’Ottocento ad oggi, la ricezione nella terminologia scientifica coeva ed il rapporto con le parole del greco classico cui fanno riferimento.

In the eighteenth century the rapid progress of science made it necessary to develop a sector-based language suited to an ever increasing specialization of the different disciplines. The formation of neoclassical compound words is one of the most frequently used tools for creating such neologisms.
The naturalist Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti, key figure in the Florentine intellectual élite, is the author of a series of new words of Greek origin that were intended to define a system of historical and naturalistic sciences. This article makes a survey of Greek words existing in three important works by Targioni Tozzetti, classified on the basis of the attestation period, and concentrating on the new words that can be attributed to him. A further analysis deals with the sector in which the naturalist mainly worked, that is to say the nouns used in sciences. Their lexicographical fortune from the nineteenth century until today, their acceptance in contemporary scientific terminology and their relationship to the classical Greek words to which they refer are also analysed.
