Filosofia Clandestina e a De la Sagesse de Pierre Charron

    Pierre Charron's De La Sagesse was a very influential book during the seventeenth century, especially for the libertines, who reserved a prominent place for it in their library and used its arguments to fight the religious superstition and even the belief in God. Ideas such as the contradiction of the religion to the reason, the defense of an autonomous morality which leads to happiness without the assistance of grace (superiority of the human nature as human), and the apology of the strong-spirits who cast doubt on everything, are conceptions, disseminated in the libertine literature, that find in the work of Charron its main source. In his work, the principle according to which the wise man should judge everything and the disjunction between the internal and the external reigns would strongly impact on the posterity - reasons why some of its readers would find in De La Sagesse a great risk of impiety. Considering that, this paper will show that the foundations of the clandestine philosophy, which uses reason to attack religion, in a great measure, draws on charronian arguments to construct its discourse. We intend to show how a certain reading of Charron - which by the way distorts his original intentions - has served as the basis for the irreligious philosophical thought of the Enlightenment century.

    A De la Sagesse de Pierre Charron foi muito influente durante o século XVII e terá centralidade na biblioteca dos libertinos, de tal modo que diversos autores deste movimento irão recolher argumentos da obra para combater a superstição religiosa e mesmo a crença em Deus. Argumentos tais como a contradição da religião para a razão, a defesa de uma moral autônoma que permite a felicidade sem auxílio da graça - superioridade da natureza humana enquanto humana -, e a exaltação dos espíritos fortes que colocam todas as coisas em dúvida, serão ideias muito presentes na literatura libertina e que se valerão da obra de Charron como principal fonte. O princípio da Sagesse de que cabe ao sábio julgar todas as coisas e a cisão operada na obra entre o domínio interior e exterior terão fortes impactos em sua posteridade, razões que farão com que alguns de seus leitores vejam na Sagesse um grande perigo e risco de impiedade. Nesse sentido, mostraremos como que os fundamentos da filosofia clandestina, que usa a razão para atacar a religião, se valem de argumentos charronianos para construir seu discurso. Pretendemos mostrar como que uma determinada leitura de Charron, leitura esta que inclusive distorce a sua intenção original, serve de fundamento para o pensamento filosófico irreligioso que surgirá no século das Luzes.
