Resumen de Lattanzio Gambara a Maguzzano

Stafano L'Occaso

  • Lattanzio Gambara at Maguzzano.

The Benedictines frequently employed the artist Lattanzio Gambara (ca. 1530-1574), who in the 1560s often painted in churches belonging to the Order: in Brescia and Rodengo Saiano, in San Benedetto Polirone near Mantua and even in Modena. A so far underrated altarpiece in the church of Maguzzano -having close links with Polirone- is here attributed to Gambara on stylistic grounds. The painting previously referred to as 17th-century Emilian art, represents an episode from the life of Saint Benedict and can be readily compared with the 'Conversion of Saul' formerly in Polirone and now in Brescia (Banco di Brescia). The latter altarpiece was commissioned in 1560 (not in 1561 as previously thought) and a similar or sligthly later date can now be proposed for the altarpiece of Maguzzano.
