Resumen de Utilización de terapia antimicrobiana empírica en servicios no quirúrgicos

Objective: To determine the prevalence of empirical antibiotherapy and to analyze the antimicrobial treatment used in non-surgical services of a specialty hospital. Material and Methods: Review of clinical histories from patients with antibiotic treatment, obtained in two periods in a cross-sectional study. Results: A larger proportion of lower airway respiratory infection was found, including pneumonia and non-surgical digestive and urinary infections. It was established that a large percentage of empirical antimicrobial prescriptions exist. The requested microbiologic documentation is scarce and with few isolations. The beginning of the empirical treatment is with monotherapy in most cases, receiving an average of 1 or 2 antibiotic per patient. Sequential therapy was considered inadequate for a large percentage of prescriptions, based on this fact, it is imperative to stress on this therapeutic aspect. Conclusion: It is necessary an adequate protocol for empirical antimicrobial therapy in every pathology, by analyzing and correcting any detected errors
