A collection of articles written by Martin Bertram forms fundament and starting point for this contribution, which discusses different aspects of canon law manuscript studies. The paper addresses the function of more or less unimposing types of texts for the spread of medieval legal knowledge, quantitative aspects in the transmission of manuscripts and their importance for the assessment of singular books, and the updating of texts, becoming more and more independent, using the example of Innocent's IV commentaries.
