Aim: Analyze the current use of linezolid in our hospital since its inclusion in the formulary. Method: Prospective data were obtained from patients who received this antibiotic during their hospital stay and from patients treated at home treatment during the period comprised between July, 2002 and December, 2003. The use indications and the antibiograms were analyzed for every case. Results: 82 patients received this antibiotic during the period of study. ICU, infections disease and home health care were the departments that prescribed linezolid more frequently. The main indication for prescribing of linezolid was the treatment of infections by microorganisms sensitive to vancomycin and/or teicoplanin but, because of either toxicity or tolerability cawes, could not be used. Conclusions: In general, indications are adjusted to the approved health authorities, howerer in some cases previous antibiogram to the beginning of the treatment was not available. As linezolid belongs to a new class of antibiotics, its use in an empirical way should be avoided at all cost
