This article studies visual and textual representations of the siege and destruction of Magdeburg, during the Thirty Years´ War. It attempts to analyze the ways in which contemporary accounts attempted to understand and explain a fact that was considered exceptional, even in the frame of the rules of engagement of those times. Some of those representations attempted to link the fact with previous events, even remote in time. Others chose an outright condemnation of war as such.
