R. Fischer zu Cramberg's 2001 dissertation clarifies the theme of "treasure trove" from the legal perspective. For the monument-curator, whose profession requires frequent interaction with metal detectorists, treasure-hunters and seekers of military remains, it presents an informative summary. Classical sources as well as the medieval and modern legal background are treated in detail. Last but not least, definitions are provided for the terms "Schatz" (treasures), "Regal" (government financial privileges), and "Schatzregal" (regulations governing the ownership of treasure trove). Since the author rejects current treasure trove regulations, it seems necessary to evaluate some of his statements from an archaeological standpoint. A description of the need for treasure trove regulation (or perhaps preferably "monument protection regulation"), from the perspective of the archaeological field, is increasingly to be desired.
