Objective: The objective was to design and to implant an integral control panel in a pharmacy service of a 1300-bed hospital. Material and methods: The basic aspects of an element of management control from for-profit companies were re-adapted to the particular situation of a hospital. The basic perspectives, upon which the operation of a pharmacy service leans, were established. Indicators were selected to evaluate these perspectives. Prospective measurements of all these indicators throughout the 2002 exercise were made and, in cases where it was posible, they were calculated in a retrospective manner. Results: The integral control panel was implanted and developed throughout a complete exercise by adding data from previous exercises to specify some indicators. Conclusions: The designed control panel was considered appropriate and reasonable. The results obtained by the pharmacy service were considered to be correct and helped to rectify some aspects that could lead to inadequate situations
