  • Objective: To describe the procedure used for the introduction of a pharmacotherapeutic information program about oral cytostatic drugs for the oncohematologic patient. Method: Our hospital's pharmacy department has assumed since 1991 the dispensation to outpatients from the day hospital of all the oral cytostatic drugs that, with increasing frequency, become apart of the chemotherapy protocols. In every cycle, the quantity of each oral medication that the patient will most likely need to complete his/her treatment is dispensed. In January, 2002, the pharmacy department began the creation, in consensus with the oncology department, patients information leaflets (PIL) about oral cytostatic drugs. Those oral cytostatic drugs with higher prescription levels in the day hospital are selected. A bibliographical search takes place and each medication's record is checked out to obtain and select the information to be provided to the patients. The pharmacist calculates the total cytostatic dose, previously prescribed by the oncologist in m2/day, and distributes the dose/day throughout the most adequate hourly intervals for each medication. PIL about 7 drugs have been created and the corresponding one is attached to the prescribed oral cytostatic drug whenever a cycle is begun and every time there is a change in dosage. The tryptics are composed of an hourly schedule in which the calculated dose is indicated for each patient as well as the treatment's duration time. Furthermore, a series of recommendations that support the adequate use of such medication are compiled. Conclusions: A better knowledge about oral cytostatic drugs' characteristics and the adequate understanding of the posologic patterns help to prevent problems related to medication, which implies a better standard of quality in the onco-hematologic patient's care
