Uso de filgrastim en pacientes con cáncer de mama y esquema de quimioterapia FEC 600

  • Objective: To evaluate the use of filgrastim, stimulating factor of granulocyte colonies (G-CSF), by subcutaneous route, in patients with breast cancer to which the chemotherapy scheme FEC 600 was administered (5-fluorouracil 600 mg/m 2, epirubicin 90 mg/m 2, cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m 2) in our hospital, taking as a reference the latest recommendations from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) from the year 2000. Methods: Descriptive and retrospective study of patients with breast cancer under treatment with FEC 600, had or not received filgrastim, during the year 2002. The data analyzed by us have been the following: neutropenia by chemotherapy cycle, delays in the administration of the cycles and reductions in the dose per chemotherapy cycle. Results: Of the total of patients under treatment with FEC 600 during the year 2002, 94 patients were susceptible of evaluation and filgastrim was not administered to 19 of them. Of the 75 patients who received filgrastim during the course of the chemotherapy, in 57 the indication was as primary prophylaxis and in 18 as secondary prophylaxis. Conclusions: Filgrastim has been used most of the time (61% of the patients) in an indication for which the ASCO considers not to be justified (primary use of G-CSF in a routinely manner), for that reason it is necessary to elaborate a protocol for the use of filgrastim in oncologic patients under treatment with chemotherapy in our hospital
