Resumen de Using self-directed Teams to integrate service-learning into an organizational communication course

Mark Braund

  • This article describes the use of self-directed teams to incorporate service-learning into an organizational communication course. The service-learning project was conducted in conjuntion with the local school district, under a grant designed to improve relationships between area educational agencies and the community. The service-learning project described in this report addressed this need through the completion of a communication audit modeled on the international Communication Association's audit protocol. The service-learning project utilized self-directed student teams that surveyed or interviewed nearly 400 staff, student, parant, and general community members, performed a content analysis of printed material produced by the school district for a variety of audiences, and examined the use of telecommunication and information technology in the district offices and classrooms. At the conclusion of the project students engaged in structured reflection. Project initiation, planning, implementation, and the results of the service-learning reflective process are the focus of this report
