  • Resumen
    • The family of carbapenems includes three antibiotics: imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem (recently commercialized). Their action mechanism makes them particularly efficient in infections produced by gram-positive, as well as gram-negative bacteria. These drugs' main problems, specially in the case of imipenem, are the side effects and specifically the seizures that may force a treatment suspension. The main risk factors for presenting seizures are: previous injuries in the CNS, epilepsy, renal insufficiency, excessive dosage, treatments of more than seven days in duration and the presence of infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
