    En este trabajo se opina sobre la evolución del sistema portuario español a través del espejo del hombre y de la sociedad a la que sirve. Se recuerda a Iribarren, creador de obras de abrigo, y a otros ingenieros ilustres que conformaron su estatus actual. Tras ellos surgen otros ingenieros que dan la dimensión humana a la ingeniería marítima y nos permite cuestionar el compromiso con los jóvenes ingenieros y el medio ambiente. La mar chica del puerto, crucero marino, tránsito de personas y embarcaciones, es el motivo del discurso.

    This article outlines the development of the Spanish port system from the perspective of the people and society they serve. Reference is made to Iribarren, the creator of harbour and sea works, and other illustrious engineers that have made the system what it is today. These founding figures have been followed by other engineers that give a human dimension to maritime engineering and allow us to consider the ensuing commitment to young engineers and the environment. The harbour, sea passage and the transit of passengers and vessels, all serve as this basis for these deliberations.
