  • Resumen
    • Due to the interest of the UTFV authorities to transform the institution into a sustainable campus, in 2011 the UTFV got the ISO 14001 certification; this fact has motivated research on new ways to reduce the environmental impact coming from the UTFV activities. This work consists in the "practical application" of traditional knowledge about the properties of the eucalyptus essential oil, in order to develop a more environmental friendly cleaning liquid and to reduce the environmental impact due to the UTFV cleaning activities. The cleaning liquid was obtained by the cold maceration method. The saturation time and the disinfection efficiency were determined. The materials availability and the production cost were determined too. The disinfecting power of the eucalyptus based cleaning liquid was found to be twice the disinfecting power of the cleaning commercial liquid used in the UTFV. It was also found that the eucalyptus cleaning liquid can be used just 24 hours after its preparation. The use of an eucalyptus based cleaning liquid is a good alternative for sustainable cleaning processes, because it reduces the water and soil pollution, and because it is also an 100% natural and biodegradable product.
