  • The drop out appears as an indicator of crisis in education and is a problem for its impact on quality indicators. Social representations are made by the individual buildings within a social context. To identify the social representations built by deserters from the Faculty of Medicine, interpreting their ideas, discourses, attitudes and actions. We conducted depth interviews with 10 students dropouts (students who voluntarily or involuntarily interrupted studies in final form). The interviews were transcribed and analyzed with an open and axial coding. Technique was used thematic content analysis of Bardin. The meanings of social representations of this group of the desertion process include the major categories of feelings, vocation, school history, attitudes and actions. In different dimensions, it was noted that students who interrupt their speeches prior information used to justify this process. In all cases the drop was considered a failure at school, which led to even think about suicide. The image of the desertion process places them in an identity problem, which makes them human beings failed. The results show the need for a reformulation of the traditional model of teaching and learning, humanistic education, providing the support needed to reconcile the needs and interests of drop-outs.
